Hormones are often the root causes and solutions to various problems such as PMS, perimenopausal symptoms, PCOS, difficulty losing weight, chronic fatigue, brain fog, depression, adrenal fatigue, infertility, cancer risk, libido, and thyroid.
Hormones are extremely powerful in coordinating the actions of our organs and glands and affecting our quality of life. When they are out of balance, they can affect every other system in our body.
There is a new test that measures hormones that determine the health state of all of these conditions called the DUTCH test. “DUTCH” stands for Dried Urine Total Complete Hormones and is created by Precision Analytical lab. With this test you can discover the hidden causes behind your symptoms and even see the red flags before the symptoms begin. It includes measures of the major hormones progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, and their metabolites. It also includes measures of DNA damage and other measures.
At Tao of Venus, we have put together the Tao of Venus Comprehensive Hormone Assessment with Interpretation to be added to your Reset Program. The assessment includes the DUTCH test plus a personalized consult based on your results from one of our licensed hormone experts. Comprehensive thyroid panel can be added onto the CHAI.
Estrogen dominance is a major component of most hormonal problems
Estrogen dominance is one of the most common causes of hormonal symptoms. This state is created when you either don’t have enough progesterone to balance your natural estrogen or the build up of natural or synthetic estrogens “overpowers” your progesterone.
Estrogen dominance results in PMS, emotional disturbance, migraines, heavy periods and tender breasts after ovulation. Are you estrogen dominant? The DUTCH test can show us what your total estrogen is and its relationship to progesterone.
But it’s not just about total estrogen and progesterone levels….
How are you processing and metabolizing your estrogen?
Your body breaks down and processes hormones in various ways, resulting in a multitude of hormonal profiles that can be tested to give clues about your hormonal health. We then can look at your hormonal pattern to determine the best way to balance your particular hormones and create a balancing regimen for you.
Your ratios of 2-OH, 4-OH, and 16-OH estrogens is key for breast cancer prevention and monitoring. 4-OH and 16-OH estrogens are cancer-promoting metabolites of estrogen. At least 70% of your estrogen should break down to 2-OH because this is the more protective estrogen metabolite.
Is your estrogen adequately methylated?
Another important aspect of hormonal health is methylation. Your liver “methylates” estrogen as a protective step to detoxify excess estrogen. With the Tao of Venus Comprehensive Hormone Assessment, you will get key insights into your liver health, how this relates to your hormonal health, and be guided on how to optimize your hormone methylation.
Your cortisol values will give us insight into your thyroid and adrenal health
Cortisol is an important energizing hormone and is ideally found in the right amounts at the right time of day. Sometimes, cortisol levels are high or low and should be fixed. But cortisol balance isn’t determined with a simple number. The DUTCH reveals not only free cortisol levels, but also total metabolized cortisol. Metabolized cortisol comprises 80% of your total production and is a more accurate way of determining adrenal gland health. High metabolized cortisol often means that free cortisol is low. In hypothyroidism, for example, the body experiences sluggish clearance of cortisol because the liver is not getting rid of it as well. If a practitioner only looks at your body’s free cortisol level, they might think this person is making too much cortisol. But the DUTCH test can reveal whether your body is making too much, or whether your body is clearing it too slowly because of hypothyroidism. Discovering a thyroid imbalance is a key step in restoring optimal hormone balance. A thyroid panel can be added to the DUTCH (DUTCH + Thyroid).
DHEA and Hormonal Health
The DUTCH combines the three most abundant metabolites of DHEA: DHEA-sulfate, etiocholanolone and androsterone. 90% of the DHEA in the body exists as DHEA-sulfate. However, sulfation of DHEA into DHEA-S is inhibited by inflammation. Therefore, If you have high total DHEA production but low DHEA-S, it could be due to inflammation and therefore be affecting cortisol balance. Our job is then to discover the root cause of your inflammation and reverse it to restore your hormonal health.
Despite the fact that testosterone is much higher in men than in women, testosterone level is still an integral part of female hormonal health. Insight into the metabolites of testosterone breakdown will also clue us into your overall hormonal health.
We want our patients to not only have this deeper insight into their health, but to also have the proper guidance on how to optimize their hormones and health. As a woman and a practitioner of women’s health, I know all too well how debilitating hormone imbalances can be. At Tao of Venus, we have the tools to discover the main causes of hormonal imbalances which, unfortunately, are not generally understood. We will guide you on your path toward hormonal freedom with our unique approach.
Tao of Venus Comprehensive Hormone Assessment can be added to you Reset Program which includes DUTCH testing, scientific insights into how your body is functioning will be revealed and how to best create a plan for hormonal healing. If you have too much or too little of a hormone, if your liver is sluggish or your methylation is too slow or too fast, symptoms of hormone imbalance will present.
